Could use some help with amp sim routing

MessageAuthor

Here's what I'm trying to do. I have a parent track with an amp sim on it (LePou HyBrit) set to stereo mode. Then there's two child tracks with the guitar takes on them, one for left and one for right. What I'd like to do is use NadIR with two different IR's, one close mic'd and one room mic. I want the close mic of the left guitar panned to the left, and the room mic of the left guitar panned to the right. And vice versa for the right guitar. Like this: [Parent] HyBrit, NadIR 1 (Close mic L, Room mic R), NadIR 2 (Close mic R, Room mic L) - [Child left] - [Child right] Seems easy enough at a glance but I'm having difficulties figuring out how NadIR's different stereo modes work, and I also have a feeling some REAPER routing magic is required to prevent both L and R signals being fed serially through both instances of NadIR. The question is how. Is this even possible using one instance of an amp sim with two instances of NadIR on the same parent track? Thankful for any pointers. Edit: maybe this should have been posted in REAPER Q&A, Tips, Tricks and Howto. Sorry about that, feel free to move.

And oh, what are these JS splitter/combiner that you mention? I have some vague memory of something like this existing back when I was trying to set up ReaVerb for true stereo operation years ago, but I can't seem to find them in my REAPER install anymore. Maybe they're called something different?

I see JS: 3-Band Splitter and JS: 3-Band Joiner, on up through 5-Band. Not sure if that's what you're looking for.

Have you looked at the js mixer plugins?

frkasper, brainwreck: thanks for the suggestions. As for using a subproject, it might work but it might also add even more processing overhead than just using more tracks just like Pickasso suggested. Now the JS mixer thingy is probably what I'd use to sum everything towards the end of the signal chain (which is what I think I used for those true stereo reverb experiments) but what has me stumped right now is how to make the two output L/R channels of the amps sim be processed separately, in stereo, by two instances of NadIR. Amp sim out L -> NadIR with close mic panned L and room mic panned R Amp sim out R -> NadIR with close mic panned R and room mic panned L But even if I set up the whole signal chain with 4 channels instead of two, making sure to route the R output of the amp sim only two the second input pair of the second NadIR, it seems as if everything gets fed into only the first (L) instance of NadIR. Which makes sense I suppose as NadIR only has two inputs. But I have a distinct feeling I've seen something like this done, maybe not with amp sims but with other stuff. Parallell processing of stereo outputs on the same track. I'm missing something here and I'm not really experienced enough with REAPER's routing to figure it out on my own.

cerendir, sorry, but this is getting comical. Hybrit has two inputs and two outputs. So I suppose you could use a single instance of it. I'll plug in my interface and see what's up with it.

This seems to work: Parent track with 4 channels. 1 and 2 into Amp L and R. Amp L out to 1 and 2. Amp R out to 3 and 4. 1 and 2 into NadIR 1 (Stereo routing) then out to 1 and 2. 3 and 4 into NadIR 2 (Stereo routing) then out to 3 and 4. Insert JS 8x stereo to 1x stereo mixer (IX mixer) after NadIR 2 to mix 1/2 with 3/4. Just copy/paste NadIR 1 to create NadiR 2 (to save having to load the IR's again) but make sure NadiR 2 has left side panned right and right side panned left.

Hmmm...I don't know what the hell the two inputs are for on Hybrit, because I only get a response from input 1, whether it is set to stereo or mono. Looks like it's back to one guitar. I see why you want to use a single instance, though. It isn't exactly cpu friendly. Setting it to mono halves the cpu use, though.

Hi cerendir, you need to pan your child tracks left and right!

Figured it out! The HyBrit routing needs to look like the attached image. Maybe that was what you meant Goldreap, in that case I must have misunderstood you.
